"Going Thing" special edition Mustang

made as a tribute to the Ford Drag Racing Team Mustangs, these were 103 special edition Mustangs I've never seen or heard of before. This one was brought to the 2014 Amelia Island Concours

"Branded" Mustang special

Ford offered a dealer installed package called “Branded Mustang” in 1968 with patterned tops similar to the Mopar Mod Tops. There were two kits available, one for ’65-66 and one for ’67-68.

Branded edition Mustangs were created by dealerships on mostly used 65-68 Mustangs to spiff them up for resale. The Branding kit was available from Ford. The kit included choice of colored vinyl tops (in 15 colors), side stripes (in 5 colors), quarter panel chrome, and special Branded emblems.

the vinyl tops could be in four patterns - Paisley, Sculptured, Tweed, or Leather. They also came in 15 different colors. Or you could get just white or black. The stripes came in five different colors.

The Branded Mustang Kit was used by dealers on new and used Mustang coupes and was distributed by DSI Corp., Plymouth, Mich. directly to Ford Dealers.

It consisted of:
 1. Pre-cut, hand-sewn vinyl top - 15 different colors or patterns
2. Two black and brass or silver and black C-pillar emblems - marked left and right
 3. Left and right Screw-On quarter moldings - with Ford part numbers
4. Pre-cut "Thoroughbred" stripes in five colors (Red, white, black, blue, gold)
5. Two cans of Mastic glue
6. Ford instruction guide

This all came in a 3 foot long shipping tube from DSI.

The tops are all different and range from 'pretty cool' to 'butt ugly'.
There also is a thoroughbred stripe identification chart.

Can you believe I just learned of special edition Mustangs I've previously never heard of? "Miilionth Anniversary Gold", and the "Gold Nugget Special"

About 50 were made in 1966, maybe 5 still exist. They were not much more than a hard top with a 289, pony interior, and special gold paint.

This car was in two magazines: The June 2009 issue of Cars and Parts, and the July 2009 issue of Mustang Monthly. The original owner says this car was the first unit produced, and that it had been on promotional display as Metke Ford in Bellevue Washington. 'Treasure Chest' keys were mailed to area residents - inside the dealership's chest were keys to the Gold Mustang.

The owner's father-in-law stopped by the Ford place while his wife went shopping for a dress: the car was his. The whole story was told in the Seattle Times and Seattle Post Intelligencer. It has been in storage since 1985 by the original owner, then sold in 1994

there were some more that I've never heard of before, but you might not be interested in them, they were really nothing but special paint colors;
Black Hills Gold was a special color for the January 1968, Color of the Month promotion rumored to be in the Denver area only with cars special ordered from the San Jose factory. Although we have identified other Black Hills Gold and other Color of the Month Mustangs built at other factories and sent across the nation. The Color of the Month was a promotion for the first four months of 1968, where special colors were connected to main holidays for special sales: Black Hills Gold paint for the New Year celebration in January, Passionate Pink for Valentine's day in February, Emerald Green for St. Patrick's day in March, and Eastertime Coral for Easter in April.

Spanish Gold was one of 13 special order colors available for the west coast Rainbow of Colors promotion running from 1968 through 1969. This promotion offered new Mustang owners optional upgrades and special colors such as
Madagascar Orange,
Whipped Cream,
Spanish Gold,
Dandelion Yellow,
Hot Pink,
Caribbean Coral,
Forest Green,
Sierra Blue, and Moss Green.

All Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustangs were built in San Jose (VIN starting with 8R or 9R) and ordered in the Los Angeles (DSO 71) or San Jose (DSO 72) area.

the GT 350H found in Compton... then bought, and used as bait on a trailer to hook a GT 500

Rich Barnes has a Mustang restoration business in Golden Colorado, and was in Compton looking for this GT 350, bought it, was on the way home when getting gas in San Jose, and the guy at the next gas pump over spoke up about having a GT 500 in a shipping container that he'd blown up the motor while running Pike's Peak

and that is why you connect on facebook to magazines like Hot Rod. You learn of stories like this on their websites http://www.hotrod.com/cars/featured/1108-1968-ford-mustang-shelby-g-t-350-bait-hooks-a-bigger-fish/  from barn find story collector Jerry Heasley
